Cheap EVs Are Coming to Europe, and the Model Count Shows It
Sales of electric cars under 25,000 euros are projected to rise sevenfold as automakers chase the budget tier
The number of electric car models priced under 25,000 euros in Europe is set to expand sharply, and sales of those budget EVs are projected to rise sevenfold as more automakers introduce affordable models. The shift, flagged in reporting surfaced on Hacker News, targets the part of the market that has been missing since EVs went mainstream: the bottom.
For years the electric transition had a hole in the middle of its logic. Policy pushed buyers toward EVs while the cheapest electric cars cost far more than the petrol models they were meant to replace. Early adopters with money filled the premium tier, and the mass market waited. A sevenfold jump in affordable sales is what it looks like when that waiting ends.

slow replacement faster fleet turnoverThe mechanism is ordinary and that is the point. Battery costs fall, platforms get reused across model lines, and manufacturers that ignored the entry segment start building for it because that is where the unsold demand sits. Affordability, not another mandate, is what moves the next wave of buyers. People who skipped the first generation because the sticker price did not work replace an aging petrol car when the math finally does.
There are reasons for restraint. Sevenfold growth off a small base is still growth off a small base, and projections are not registrations. Cheap EVs tend to carry smaller batteries and shorter range, which is fine for city driving and worse for the long-trip anxiety that keeps some buyers on petrol. The budget tier also intersects with a trade fight, since much of the world's low-cost EV manufacturing capacity sits in China, and Europe's tariff posture will shape which cheap cars actually reach showrooms and at what price.
The climate math still favors the trend. Transport emissions fall fastest when the median new car goes electric, not when a handful of expensive ones do. A credible budget tier is the difference between an EV market that serves the well-off and one that reaches the drivers who account for most of the miles. If the models arrive and the prices hold, this is the segment that finally makes the transition a mass-market event rather than a premium one.
